Spotlight On: Shift Youth + Community

We love having Shift Youth + Community as part of our Connect Reading family! Aneta Banas, Executive Assistant and Administrator, took some time to answer our questions and tell us a bit more about the charity.

We are a Christian new monastic and missional movement. We base ourselves in local communities and work with churches, schools and other agencies to provide the best opportunities for young people and communities. Helping them to find their purpose and their voice. We believe changing lives by transforming culture is possible – and we want to show you how.

Why did you join Connect Reading?

We joined Connect Reading to connect with other organisations across Reading and expand our network.

What was your biggest challenge last year?
I think for everyone, Covid is the biggest challenge. We have found schools/youth work restrictions challenging as well as supporting churches in community mission during the pandemic.
What have you learned?

We have learnt the importance of relationships both as a means for support and reaching our community and its young people.

What has been your biggest creative triumph as an organisation?
Our biggest creative triumph was the ability to effectively work from home when needed; creation of our community radio station (www.radio.syc.life); and the ability to transfer our courses, such as the Families Course, online.
What are you most looking forward to?

We have a Benefit Dinner coming up in October, which is very exciting. We are also very looking forward to welcoming more team.

How can people connect with you and support what you’re doing?

You can connect with us through our website www.syc.life, or by coming to our monthly Community Dinners.

We have a great range of amazing opportunities: from administrative, youth work, community work leads to radio positions. Please contact us to find out more: office@syc.life
