We love having CommuniCare as part of our Connect Reading community! Francesca Yates, Communicare Manager, took some time to answer our questions and tell us a bit more about the charity.

We are a charity providing information, advice and support to anyone in need. We aim to support people in understanding and navigating everyday services that they need to access to enable them to live better lives. We deal with a huge range of issues including helping with benefits checking, welfare rights, form filling and housing advice, information on living with disabilities, help for carers and much more.

Why did you join Connect Reading?

Partnership working across Reading is key to supporting the people in need in the town. Connecting with other organisations, charities and services across the town enables us to support our clients better.

What was your biggest challenge last year?
Taking our advice service from a face to face service to a telephone service. Many of our clients have English as a second language, some have low literacy and many are digitally excluded. Supporting these clients was very challenging as they were very limited in what they could do without our hands on support.
What have you learned?

People are a lot more resilient than they think they are! The third sector agencies in Reading all went above and beyond to continue to support those in need in Reading, whilst struggling themselves with a whole different way of working.

What has been your biggest creative triumph as an organisation?
Supporting our clients for 3 months with telephone advice only, and then managing to get everything Covid secure so we could open our doors again in June 2020.
What are you most looking forward to?

A sense of normality. Being able to open up our services fully and finally welcoming back all of our volunteers.
